None of us can have missed the horrors that the people of Haiti are experiencing as a result of the earthquake. If you want to help, here are some links to organisations that can convert your money into valuable aid. www.dec.org.uk http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8456730.stm ************************************************ Dear all, The reality of Climate Change and the effects it will wreak on all populations across the world has been with us for many years, but there is still a great deal of reluctance by governments, organisations and individuals to address the changes that need to be made to avoid pushing the planet past the tipping point where temperature change leads to runaway desertification, the disappearance of large areas of the earth’s surface and the serious potential for the Sixth Extinction to be precipitated. The Climate Conference in Copenhagen in December may be the last chance to set serious, workable targets for carbon reduction and politicians will need all the pressure in the world to enable them to take long-term decisions for people rather than short-term election decisions. There are many groups through which you can make your voice heard, but here are just a selection. Large NGOs such as Oxfam, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace are all running campaigns. A world-wide online organisation that petitions and takes high-profile action is Avaaz and major companies such as Waterstones are adding their support to combating climate change. If you haven’t seen the absolutely brilliant and chilling film The Age of Stupid then find out where it is showing and get along while you can. The NHS is showing the film to all of its employees – for free! The Age of Stupid team have also started a campaign for everyone, individuals, businesses, to reduce their carbon emissions by 10% in 2010 – 10:10 The UK is the first government to agree that the importance of the talks in Copenhagen warrants sending the Prime Minister to negotiate what will hopefully be binding worldwide reductions in carbon production. You can put your views to the government via edspledge.com and of course contact your local MP. There will also be lots of direct action events to raise the visible profile of the need to tackle climate change which you may want to take part in, but hopefully everyone will find some route through which to make their voice heard.
